How this work began
I followed the sound through Lisbon’s Calçada Portuguesa, the mosaic streets unfurling beneath my feet like a river of hand-laid memory. Black and white stones curved into waves and spirals worn smooth by centuries of footsteps: lovers, mourners, fishermen, poets, widows dressed in black, children chasing pigeons and giant soap bubbles drifting through the open plazas like floating planets catching the sun.
Couples gathered beneath cathedral-like branches where sunlight filtered through leaves in fractured gold. They danced close together as though the music itself had placed their hands exactly where they belonged. They were not performing. They were remembering each other.
Years of traveling with a camera in one hand and a notebook never far from the other taught me something nearly two decades in a college classroom would later confirm: the people with the most extraordinary stories are rarely the loudest ones in the room.
Again and again, I learned the same thing: the story is usually already there. People do not need someone to invent meaning for them. They need someone patient enough to listen for it, thoughtful enough to recognize it, and skilled enough to give it language.
